PMA or OEM – What’s the Difference and Why It Matters

OEM vs PMA – The Basics

Every aircraft component begins with its OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) – the company that designed and produced the original part installed on the aircraft.
PMA (Parts Manufacturer Approval) refers to manufacturers that have received official authorization from aviation regulators to produce certified alternatives to OEM parts. These components are fully tested, approved, and traceable, but typically come at a lower cost.

Both OEM and PMA parts are considered safe and compliant when supplied with proper documentation and installed in accordance with the aircraft’s type certificate.

How OEM and PMA Differ

The key difference is origin – and often, price. OEM parts come directly from the original manufacturer, while PMA parts are approved equivalents built under separate certification programs.

PMA components aren’t “copies” – they’re certified, tested, and fully approved alternatives that meet all required airworthiness standards.

When to Use OEM and When to Choose PMA

The decision depends on the aircraft’s status and the operator’s priorities.
For new or warranty-covered aircraft, OEM components are usually the best choice to maintain manufacturer compliance.

For routine maintenance or older fleets, PMA parts can deliver significant savings without compromising safety. They meet the same certification requirements and are often available sooner, reducing AOG time.

7TAG AVIA helps operators evaluate both options and select the most practical solution based on aircraft type, maintenance goals, and budget.

Avoiding Confusion with Counterfeit Parts

Some buyers mistakenly equate PMA with “non-original” components and start searching for cheaper, unverified parts online – a serious error. PMA parts are fully legal and approved, while uncertified or counterfeit items pose genuine safety risks.

Always confirm authenticity through proper documentation: FAA Form 8130-3, EASA Form 1, or equivalent certificates, along with serial numbers and traceability records. Reputable suppliers, including 7TAG AVIA, always provide these as part of the shipment.

The 7TAG AVIA Approach

At 7TAG AVIA, we focus on solutions, not sales.
If absolute originality is essential, we supply OEM components.
If cost efficiency and fast availability are the priority, we recommend certified PMA alternatives that meet every regulatory requirement.

Each delivery includes complete documentation, photo verification, and shipment tracking from start to finish.
Our philosophy is simple – aircraft should fly, not wait.
Whether OEM or PMA, what truly matters is reliability, certification, and a partner you can trust.
